New Market Initiative: New Consumer demand for Bitter Melon

September 28 - October 7, 2006

The NBMC Educational Exhibit booth was installed in the Topsfield Fair, founded in 1818, which was the oldest agriculture fair in the United States. The Fruit and Vegetable Barn has exhibit categories for 61 different kinds of vegetables, 21 different types of fruit, decorated pumpkins, educational exhibits, and posters. In it’s nearly 200-year existence, Bitter Melon had never been exhibited before this year.

All submissions were judged based on relevant categories and winners each receive a ribbon and small cash prize. The NBMC installation won first prize in the ‘Educational Exhibit’ category. The installation was accompanied by participatory performances in which we asked fair-goers to take our Meyers-Bitter Survey, invited them to share a bitter story (top 10 stories won a prize!) and toured the fairgrounds as the NBMC Mascot.
